The Clean Cargo Working Group (CCWG) is a voluntary industry alliance of shippers and ocean carriers that develops standardised methods for measuring and reducing greenhouse gas emissions from containerised sea freight. Members submit vessel and cargo data to a shared platform, which calculates carbon intensity per trade lane and publishes carrier benchmarks. Shippers use these results to incorporate emissions performance into carrier selection, while carriers can identify operational inefficiencies in their fleets. Unlike regulatory instruments such as the EU Emissions Trading System, the CCWG carries no binding legal authority – participation is entirely industry-led.
