Unlike any other dangerous goods category, Class 1 explosives face the most stringent requirements in the UN transport system: impact, friction, or heat can trigger a mass explosion, a projectile effect, or a large-scale fire. The class is subdivided into six divisions (1.1 to 1.6), differentiated by explosive force and reaction behaviour – from mass explosion hazard (1.1) to extremely insensitive articles (1.6). Blasting explosives, detonators, signal devices, and pyrotechnic articles such as fireworks all fall within this class. Carriage requires government-approved specialised vehicles, trained personnel, and – depending on mode of transport – specific authorisations under ADR, the IMDG Code, or IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations. Many air carriers refuse Class 1 consignments outright.
