Freight forwarders and logistics operators encounter Class 9 as the UN dangerous goods system's residual category: it covers substances and articles that present a transport hazard but do not fall within Classes 1 through 8. Typical examples include lithium batteries and cells, environmentally hazardous substances (aquatic), and magnetised materials. Carriage is subject to specific labelling and documentation requirements under ADR, the IMDG Code, and IATA-DGR. Although Class 9 is considered less critical than Class 1 or 3, its practical requirements are not negligible – lithium batteries in particular are subject to strict quantity limits and packaging rules in air transport.
