Class 9 is the residual category for dangerous goods and articles that fall outside Classes 1 through 8 but still require regulation under transport law. Common examples include lithium batteries and cells, dry ice, magnetized materials, self-inflating life-saving appliances, and certain environmentally hazardous substances. Because the class is highly heterogeneous, requirements vary enormously: some goods need only standard labeling, while others demand specific packaging instructions, full dangerous goods declarations, and may be restricted or banned by certain carriers. Lithium batteries, in particular, are subject to strict quantity and watt-hour limits in air freight. Freight forwarders must research the precise UN entry for each Class 9 item before booking – the hazardous nature is rarely obvious from the goods themselves.
