> A consignment of sulfuric acid, sodium hydroxide, or hydrochloric acid triggers Class 8 requirements from the moment of booking.

A consignment of sulfuric acid, sodium hydroxide, or hydrochloric acid triggers Class 8 requirements from the moment of booking. Class 8 covers corrosive substances that destroy living tissue – skin and mucous membranes in particular – through chemical reaction and can degrade metals or organic materials on contact. Applicable across all transport modes under IMDG (sea), IATA DGR (air), ADR (road), and RID (rail), the regulations require mode-appropriate packaging, the corrosive pictogram (GHS05), and complete dangerous goods declarations. Ocean carriers and airlines routinely apply DG surcharges and demand tailored stowage or segregation plans. The defining criterion for Class 8 is corrosivity; if a substance is also toxic, that property is declared as a subsidiary hazard under Class 6.1.
