Shippers select the package type—excepted, Type A, Type B, or Type C—based on the material's physical form and activity level; shipping documents must state activity values and dose rates. Each package bears the trefoil radiation symbol and a Transport Index (TI) indicating the dose rate at one metre. Certain consignments—such as spent nuclear fuel or high-activity radiopharmaceuticals—require competent authority approvals, and all handling personnel must receive radiation protection training.
