Class 2 dangerous goods come into play whenever gases are transported in compressed, liquefied, or refrigerated liquefied form – from standard gas cylinders and aerosol cans to LPG tankers. Under ADR, RID, and the IMDG Code, the primary hazard arises from container pressure and the physical state of the substance. Three sub-categories apply: flammable gases (e.g. propane), non-flammable non-toxic gases (e.g. nitrogen), and toxic gases (e.g. chlorine). Pressure receptacles must undergo periodic inspection and carry a valid test date marking. Handling procedures must address the risks of impact, drops, and temperature fluctuations that can trigger uncontrolled pressure release. Transport documents must state the gas name, UN number, and correct sub-classification.
