Unlike flammable liquids that require an external ignition source, Class 1 explosives can detonate or deflagrate from the slightest mechanical shock, friction, or heat. The class covers blasting agents, fireworks, ammunition, and initiating devices, further subdivided into six divisions (1.1 to 1.6) based on the nature of the explosive hazard, and into compatibility groups A through S, which determine which substances may be carried together. In everyday freight forwarding practice, this means certified drivers, correctly placarded and marked vehicles, and strict observance of segregation rules – deviations carry serious consequences. Authorities may stop a shipment immediately if documentation is incomplete, and certain permits must be obtained well in advance from the relevant national bodies. At sea, the IMDG Code applies; in air transport, the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations govern the movement of explosives, with many substances subject to an outright carriage ban.
