The Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) is the principal international treaty prohibiting the development, production, stockpiling, and use of chemical weapons, and requiring signatory states to destroy existing arsenals. Compliance is monitored by the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) through on-site inspections and mandatory declarations. For trade and logistics, the CWC is most relevant because of dual-use chemicals: substances with legitimate industrial applications that could also be diverted for weapons production. These are classified in CWC Schedules and subject to export licences, end-use certificates, and strict documentation requirements. Freight forwarders handling such shipments must verify whether destination countries are CWC signatories and whether additional national embargo rules apply.
