A drayage driver drops a chassis at the terminal gate; minutes later another driver picks it up for the next run. That is chassis pool operations in practice. A chassis pool is a shared inventory of container chassis used collectively by multiple carriers, drayage operators, and freight forwarders at ports or inland terminals, eliminating the need for each party to own or exclusively lease dedicated units. Running a pool requires standardized agreements on availability windows, maintenance responsibilities, return deadlines, and damage liability. When well managed, pools significantly reduce idle time and fixed costs by keeping each chassis in near-continuous use. Not to be confused with chassis leasing, where a single company exclusively manages its own rented fleet.
