In intermodal operations, the two are deliberately separated: the container moves on to a vessel, train, or barge, while the chassis stays at the terminal. Standard chassis are sized for 20-foot and 40-foot containers; extendable or specialty versions accommodate oversized or overweight loads. In drayage operations around ports and rail terminals, chassis availability is often the limiting factor. They are commonly managed as leased equipment by carriers, terminal operators, or dedicated chassis providers and must pass regular safety inspections. In container logistics, the term refers strictly to this driverless trailer frame – not to the structural frame of a truck.
