Rather than booking capacity piecemeal on a scheduled liner service, a shipper or forwarder who charters a vessel, aircraft, truck, or railcar takes on the entire unit for an agreed voyage or period. The governing contract—known in shipping as the charter party—defines load port, discharge port, cargo quantity, duration, and freight rate. Chartering suits bulk shipments, seasonal demand peaks, or trade lanes without adequate liner coverage. In sea freight, a voyage charter covers a single trip while a time charter leases the vessel for a fixed term; in air freight, charter flights are the norm for outsized cargo, project shipments, or humanitarian relief operations. Charter rates are market-driven and can diverge sharply from liner tariffs during periods of tight capacity.
