CETA (Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement) is a free trade agreement between the European Union and Canada that has been applied provisionally since September 2017. It eliminates or reduces import duties on the vast majority of traded goods and aligns technical standards, approval procedures, and conformity assessments across both markets. For freight forwarders and exporters, the practical effect is fewer customs formalities and lower landed costs on qualifying shipments. Access to preferential tariff rates depends on compliance with CETA's rules of origin – goods must genuinely originate in the EU or Canada as defined by the agreement. Full ratification by all EU member states remained pending at the time of this publication.
