Unlike standard freight documents, a Health Certificate is an official document issued by the competent health or veterinary authority of the country of origin, confirming that goods have been produced, stored, and transported in compliance with applicable health and hygiene requirements. It is required for pharmaceuticals, medical devices, foodstuffs, and other temperature-sensitive or microbiologically sensitive products. Freight forwarders must present it at the port of entry in many markets – including the EU and several Asian countries – as a mandatory import document. Without it, shipments risk being held at the border, refused entry, or ordered for destruction. It should not be confused with a phytosanitary certificate, which applies specifically to plant-based products.
