CPT (Carriage Paid To) kicks in at the moment the seller hands the goods to the first carrier: freight charges to the named destination are the seller's responsibility, but risk of loss or damage transfers to the buyer at that same handover point. This decoupling of cost obligation and risk exposure is CPT's defining characteristic and can leave buyers exposed if no additional insurance is in place. The term applies to all modes of transport and is widely used in air cargo and multimodal container shipments. Buyers needing insurance coverage should look at CIP, which shares the same risk structure but additionally requires the seller to arrange minimum insurance in the buyer's favour.
