When a shipper needs to move a full vessel load of bulk commodities or an entire aircraft payload outside scheduled services, the cargo charter broker steps in as a specialised intermediary between the shipper and the shipowner or airline. The broker surveys available charter capacity, negotiates freight rates, laycan periods, and routing, and ensures all agreed terms are recorded in a charter party (sea freight) or a charter agreement (air freight). Unlike a freight forwarder, the cargo charter broker does not act as a contracting carrier; remuneration is earned through a brokerage commission. Depending on the scope of responsibilities transferred to the charterer, practitioners distinguish between voyage charter, time charter, and bareboat charter.
