Logistics providers regularly benchmark their rates against industry standards to decide whether to adjust pricing, reduce capacity, or pursue new business. In road freight, utilization typically refers to the ratio of actual payload or floor space used relative to the vehicle's rated capacity. One important distinction: high utilization does not equal profitability—if freight rates fall below cost, a fully loaded truck still runs at a loss.
