> Bursting strength certification formally confirms that a packaging material can withstand a specified internal pressure before rupturing, with results expressed in kilopascals (kPa).

Bursting strength certification formally confirms that a packaging material can withstand a specified internal pressure before rupturing, with results expressed in kilopascals (kPa). Testing follows standardised methods such as ISO 2758 for paper and board or TAPPI T 403, conducted by an accredited laboratory. For hazardous goods and many export commodities, the certificate is a regulatory requirement – for example under IMDG regulations governing sea transport. Shippers and manufacturers present it to customs authorities and carriers as proof of conformity. It should not be confused with the box compression test (BCT), which measures a package's resistance to external stacking loads rather than internal pressure.
