When a shipper needs to move steel coils, industrial machinery, or oversized components, breakbulk cargo is often the solution: goods are loaded individually into a vessel's hold without prior containerisation, then secured piece by piece with lashing and dunnage. Breakbulk is the default choice wherever dimensions or weights make container loading uneconomical or technically impossible—think pipes, wind turbine blades, or heavy-lift project cargo. Port operations are considerably more labour-intensive than for container traffic: each piece requires individual handling, berth time is longer, and specialised cranes and stevedoring equipment are essential. For freight forwarders, breakbulk means detailed stowage planning, precise weight and centre-of-gravity calculations, and sourcing tonnage on services that run far less frequently than container lines. Not to be confused with LCL (less-than-container load), where multiple shippers' goods are consolidated inside a container—still containerised, but shared.
