Compressed air is fed into the train's continuous brake pipe and then released in a controlled sequence; crew members walk the train and check visually and by sound that brakes apply and release properly on each individual car. This test is mandatory at every train formation and after specified shunting or coupling operations. Any defect found—insufficient brake force, leaks in the pipe, or a brake that fails to release—keeps the train out of service until the fault is corrected.
