A bonded warehouse comes into play the moment imported goods are placed under customs supervision in an approved facility without immediate payment of import duties, excise taxes, or VAT. The customs debt is triggered only when goods are released into free circulation or re-exported. Bonded warehouses can be operated by freight forwarders, third-party logistics providers, or importers directly, subject to customs authority approval. They are widely used to defer duty payments, hold goods pending re-export to third countries, or manage cash flow. Not to be confused with a free zone or free port, which operate under distinct legal regimes.
