Importers and freight forwarders use a bonded warehouse to store goods under customs supervision without paying import duties and taxes upfront – charges fall due only when the goods are released into free circulation. Operations are restricted to officially licensed warehouse keepers; all stock movements must be fully documented, and inventories are subject to regular customs checks. For trading companies with uncertain markets or open customer orders, the arrangement provides meaningful cash-flow relief. Goods held in a bonded warehouse may also be repackaged, sorted, or prepared for onward shipment, subject to the type of authorization granted by the customs authority. Not to be confused with a free zone: a bonded warehouse holds individual consignments under customs lock, whereas a free zone is a defined geographic area operating under its own distinct customs regime.
