A block train runs on a direct route between origin and destination without intermediate shunting or disbanding of the wagon set – the defining characteristic that sets it apart from conventional wagonload services. By bypassing marshalling yards, rail operators cut dwell times and deliver cargo faster and at lower handling cost. Block trains are best suited to large, homogeneous flows: coal, grain, petroleum products, steel coils, or containers that can fill an entire train. The term is sometimes confused with a unit train (or full train), where all capacity belongs to a single customer; a block train may serve multiple shippers as long as the routing remains direct and uninterrupted.
