# Binding Tariff Information

> Unlike a non-binding tariff opinion, a Binding Tariff Information (BTI) legally commits both the holder and the issuing customs authority to a specific tariff classification for a defined product.

Unlike a non-binding tariff opinion, a Binding Tariff Information (BTI) legally commits both the holder and the issuing customs authority to a specific tariff classification for a defined product. Importers and freight forwarders apply for a BTI ahead of major import operations by submitting a detailed request—backed by technical specifications, photographs, or samples—to the competent customs authority. Once issued, the BTI is typically valid for three years and governs all customs assessments of that product throughout its validity. It provides cost certainty when calculating import duties and shields the holder against subsequent reclassification by customs. A BTI covers tariff classification only and must not be confused with a customs valuation ruling or a binding origin information decision.
