In air freight, the standard divisor is typically 6,000 cubic centimetres per kilogram under IATA convention; ocean freight divisors vary by carrier. The mechanism protects carriers from revenue shortfalls on low-density cargo such as foam, textiles, or furniture. Shippers can reduce their billable weight by tightening packaging and eliminating dead space within cartons or on pallets.
