Bill of lading digitalization replaces the paper original with legally valid electronic equivalents that allow digital endorsement and transfer of title. A genuine electronic bill of lading (eBL) is therefore not merely a digital image but a negotiable instrument—essential when used as a security in documentary letters of credit. Scanned PDFs carry no legal status as originals and are not a substitute. Legal recognition depends on national law and whether the platform operates under an accepted ruleset, such as the UNCITRAL Model Law on Electronic Transferable Records (MLETR).
