# Batch Management

*Last updated: 2026-06-26*

> Batch management is the systematic recording, tracking, and control of product batches across storage, picking, and distribution operations.

Batch management is the systematic recording, tracking, and control of product batches across storage, picking, and distribution operations. For regulated goods such as food, pharmaceuticals, or cosmetics, it is frequently a legal requirement: origin, production date, expiry date, storage location, and consignee must be documented for every batch without gaps. This enables targeted, lot-specific recalls rather than costly blanket product withdrawals. Modern warehouse management systems (WMS) link batch data to barcodes or RFID tags to prevent mix-ups and to enforce FIFO or FEFO stock rotation automatically. Unlike general inventory control, batch management tracks not just quantities but the individual identity and full history of each lot.
