A barcode cargo identification is a machine-readable symbol applied to a shipment or loading unit that uniquely identifies it and enables automated data capture at every point in the supply chain. Standardised symbologies such as GS1-128 or Code 128 encode information including tracking numbers, consignee details, weight, and hazardous goods indicators. Freight forwarders, consolidation hubs, and customs authorities scan the codes at each handover point to log movements, detect misrouted freight, and manage inventory in real time. Unlike RFID transponders, barcodes require line-of-sight scanning but are significantly cheaper to produce and universally compatible across carrier systems. Legible, correctly positioned barcodes are a prerequisite for seamless data exchange between partners running different IT platforms.
