A backup carrier is a pre-approved transport provider contracted by a shipper or freight forwarder to step in when the primary carrier cannot fulfil a shipment – whether due to capacity shortfall, vehicle breakdown, or service level failure. Unlike a spot carrier sourced ad hoc on the open market, the backup carrier is already vetted, rate-agreed, and integrated into the transport management system (TMS), enabling rapid activation without fresh negotiation. Shippers typically maintain a tiered carrier structure – primary, secondary, tertiary – so that escalation in a disruption scenario is seamless. In regulated segments such as cold chain or dangerous goods transport, the backup carrier must hold the same licences and certifications as the primary; without this, the fallback option is legally unusable when it matters most.
