An available dock door is an unoccupied loading or unloading position at a warehouse or distribution centre where a vehicle can berth and be processed within a scheduled time slot. The total number of dock doors is a physically fixed bottleneck: it cannot be expanded at short notice and directly caps the maximum vehicle throughput of a facility. Too few available doors create yard queues, raise detention risk, and increase handling costs. Modern yard management and warehouse management systems monitor dock occupancy in real time and coordinate vehicle appointments through slot-booking tools to smooth peak loads. Unlike overall warehouse floor space, dock availability has a direct bearing on the dwell time of individual shipments.
