An Autonomous Mobile Robot (AMR) is a self-navigating industrial vehicle that moves independently through warehouses and production areas using onboard sensors, environment mapping and real-time path planning. The key distinction from traditional Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) is infrastructure independence: AMRs need no magnetic tape, wire guidance or fixed tracks embedded in the floor. They reroute dynamically around obstacles and adapt to layout changes without reprogramming the physical environment. In day-to-day intralogistics, AMRs handle tasks such as replenishing pick stations, transporting goods between production lines and despatch areas, and supporting autonomous picking workflows.
