In a distribution centre, an AGV leaves the charging dock autonomously, navigates to the pick station, collects a loaded pallet, and delivers it to the dispatch area — no driver, no manual input required. Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) are driverless transport platforms that travel along predefined routes inside warehouses, production facilities, and logistics centres using laser, magnetic, or optical guidance systems. They handle repetitive internal transport tasks — moving pallets, bins, or racks between fixed points — reducing handling errors and labour requirements. Compared with Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs), AGVs are less flexible: they follow fixed paths or inductive loops and rely on simpler obstacle avoidance, whereas AMRs map their surroundings dynamically and reroute on the fly. AGVs deliver the strongest return on investment in environments with stable transport paths and consistently high throughput.
