> At the point of export, the Automated Export Declaration (AED) replaces paper-based customs filings: exporters or freight forwarders submit shipment data – goods description, weight, destination, value, and origin – electronically to the competent customs authority, where entries are automatically validated and risk-screened.

The system then either grants clearance or triggers an inspection. Within the EU, Germany's ATLAS and the union-wide Export Control System (ECS) form the technical backbone; most major trading nations operate comparable platforms. For freight forwarders, the AED cuts processing time considerably, as consistency checks that once required manual review run automatically – clearance can follow within minutes. It is not the same as the Export Accompanying Document (EAD), which is generated only after AED clearance and physically travels with the goods.
