Automated cargo consolidation is the software-driven grouping of multiple less-than-container-load (LCL) shipments from different shippers into a single transportation unit. Algorithms analyse available load space, weights, destinations, and delivery windows to determine the optimal loading combination without dispatcher involvement. Planning time is reduced significantly compared to manual consolidation, and space utilisation improves accordingly. Small and medium-sized shippers benefit most, as consolidation is frequently the most cost-effective alternative to full-container-load (FCL) shipping. It should not be confused with deconsolidation – the reverse process by which a consolidated unit is broken down into individual shipments at the destination.
