Unlike standard customs clearance procedures, Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) status is a certification rather than a procedure: it is granted by the competent customs authority to companies that demonstrably meet high standards in customs compliance, security, and record-keeping. Certified importers, exporters, and freight forwarders benefit from simplified procedures, fewer physical inspections, and priority handling at border crossings. The programme is grounded in the WCO SAFE Framework of Standards and is mutually recognised between numerous customs administrations through bilateral agreements. Within the EU, three variants exist: AEO-C (customs simplifications), AEO-S (security and safety), and AEO-F as the combined full status. Maintaining certification requires ongoing compliance documentation and periodic audits; the status may be suspended or revoked in cases of non-compliance.
