A certificate of origin is an official document certifying the country in which goods were produced or manufactured, typically issued by a chamber of commerce. In international trade, it is a key customs document: importers need it to comply with specific import regulations of the destination country or to substantiate where goods originate. Freight forwarders submit it alongside the commercial invoice and packing list as part of the customs declaration. Non-preferential certificates of origin simply declare the country of origin, while preferential origin documents – such as the EUR.1 movement certificate – establish entitlement to reduced tariffs under a free trade agreement. Required format and content are governed by the regulations of the importing country.
