The assigned carrier enters the transport chain at the moment of booking: a shipper, consignor, or logistics coordinator formally designates a specific carrier for a given consignment or lane and binds them contractually. From that point, the carrier bears full operational responsibility for the movement – from pickup to final delivery – under the agreed service terms. Selection is typically driven by available capacity, cost targets, or existing framework agreements. Unambiguous carrier designation is mandatory for liability allocation, customs clearance, and shipment tracking. In air freight, the assigned carrier is recorded on the Air Waybill (AWB); in road transport, on the CMR consignment note.
