AS2 (Applicability Statement 2) is a standardised protocol for the secure, reliable exchange of EDI messages over HTTP or HTTPS. Using S/MIME certificates, trading partners digitally sign and encrypt documents such as purchase orders, advance ship notices, and customs declarations, ensuring both authenticity and confidentiality at the technical level. A defining feature is the Message Disposition Notification (MDN): an automated acknowledgement returned by the recipient on receipt, giving both parties a verifiable delivery record. Because AS2 eliminates the intermediary network operator required by traditional EDI VANs, it significantly lowers transmission costs and is widely adopted by mid-sized freight forwarders and suppliers.
