A shipment reaches the border customs office and, before any further processing takes place, the customs system assigns it an Arrival Reference Number (ARN) – uniquely anchoring the consignment within the procedure from that moment on. Customs declarants and freight forwarders use the ARN to track processing status, coordinate physical examination appointments, and correctly link subsequent steps such as warehousing or release to free circulation. Without a valid ARN, downstream workflow entries cannot be properly associated with the shipment. The ARN is distinct from the MRN (Movement Reference Number), which is generated upon lodging an export or transit declaration and serves a different procedural purpose.
