A consignee needs a container unloaded but cannot schedule a labour crew or book a dock slot without knowing the exact arrival time – arrival notification closes that gap. The carrier, freight forwarder, or port operator sends the consignee a formal notice containing the ETA, shipment reference, weight and dimensions, and any special handling instructions. In ocean freight, the arrival notice is often a prerequisite for the consignee to instruct the forwarder to arrange customs clearance and to surrender the bill of lading. In air freight, the notification typically triggers the customs pre-clearance process. Not to be confused with a pre-arrival notice issued while the shipment is still in transit: the arrival notification proper is issued at or shortly after the physical arrival of the goods at destination.
