> An appeal is a formal legal remedy by which a party challenges a first-instance decision before a higher court or tribunal.

An appeal is a formal legal remedy by which a party challenges a first-instance decision before a higher court or tribunal. The appellate court reviews the case – on points of law, fact, or both, depending on the jurisdiction – and may affirm, modify, or reverse the original ruling. In customs and trade disputes, appeals come into play after administrative channels have been exhausted: for example, when a customs classification, duty assessment, or import restriction decision is brought before a court. Unlike an administrative objection directed at the issuing authority itself, an appeal is heard by an independent judicial body. Filing deadlines are strict; missing them typically renders an appeal inadmissible.
