Anti-skid materials for freight loading are placed between cargo and vehicle or pallet surfaces to increase friction and prevent load movement during transport. Common forms include rubber or woven plastic mats, friction-enhancing liners or papers, and foam wedges. They are used when loading road vehicles, rail wagons, and sea containers — particularly for non-palletised goods, steel coils, timber, or stacked cartons prone to shifting under braking and cornering forces. The CTU Code, developed jointly by IMO, ILO, and UNECE, explicitly recognises anti-skid materials as a load-securing measure. In practice, they are used alongside lashing straps or dunnage rather than as a standalone solution.
