Freight forwarders, retailers, and logistics providers across North America rely on ANSI X12 as the standard format for electronic business document exchange. Developed by the American National Standards Institute, it organises messages into transaction sets and segments: transaction set 850 represents a purchase order, 856 a shipment notice, 810 an invoice. This fixed structure enables automated, low-error processing between disparate systems without manual intervention. ANSI X12 is the dominant EDI standard in the USA and Canada; its European counterpart is EDIFACT, which is also widely used internationally.
