Unlike conventional cargo logistics, which treats goods as passive objects, animal transport logistics must integrate live animal welfare into every stage of planning and execution. Ventilated and climate-controlled compartments, mandatory rest, watering, and feeding intervals, and active measures to minimise stress are all legal requirements. In the EU, Regulation (EC) No 1/2005 sets the binding framework for commercial live animal transport; CITES provisions apply additionally when certain species are traded across third-country borders. Carriers require specific authorisations, and drivers must hold recognised competence certificates. The administrative burden – spanning transport authorisations, journey logs, and veterinary inspections – substantially exceeds that of comparable goods transport.
