Once a customs declaration has been submitted and accepted by the authority, its data cannot simply be overwritten – that is where an amendment comes in. An amendment to a customs declaration is the declarant's formal request to correct or supplement information in an already accepted declaration, whether due to an error in the goods description, quantity, or customs value, a subsequent change in circumstances, or missing supporting documents. Customs authorities generally permit amendments only while goods have not yet been presented for examination and no physical inspection has been ordered; once goods are released, the scope for correction narrows considerably. In day-to-day freight forwarding, filing an amendment is often time-critical, since incorrect data can trigger delays, post-clearance duty demands, or penalties. An amendment should not be confused with invalidation, where the entire declaration is withdrawn and resubmitted from scratch.
