Unlike refrigerated transport, ambient temperature freight transport uses no active cooling or heating equipment – cargo is exposed to the natural conditions of the conveyance and its surroundings. This applies to the vast majority of shipments: textiles, electronics, building materials, industrial goods, and most consumer products are not temperature-sensitive and require no climate control. Compared with reefer shipments, energy surcharges, temperature-monitoring fees, and cold-chain qualification requirements all fall away, reducing both cost and documentation burden. Shippers and forwarders should nonetheless verify whether specific trade lanes experience seasonal temperature extremes capable of damaging goods such as lithium-ion batteries, paints, or aerosols; in those cases, insulated packaging or climate-controlled containers may still be warranted, even without formal cold-chain status.
