Alpine transit is the freight and passenger traffic that crosses the entire Alpine arc on the way between northern and southern Europe, neither starting nor ending within the Alpine region itself. Freight is funnelled through a handful of corridors – in Switzerland the Gotthard and Lötschberg/Simplon routes, elsewhere the Brenner, Mont-Cenis/Fréjus and Tarvisio crossings. For shippers, Alpine transit is a bottleneck: capacity, train-path availability and construction work on the feeder lines often drive transit time and price more than the mountain section itself. Switzerland publishes trans-Alpine freight figures every six months and steers the traffic through modal shift policy, the distance-related heavy vehicle charge and operating subsidies for combined transport.
