> All-risk cargo insurance covers physical loss or damage to insured goods from any cause not specifically excluded by the policy.

All-risk cargo insurance covers physical loss or damage to insured goods from any cause not specifically excluded by the policy. This structure reverses the burden of proof compared to named-peril cover: the insurer must demonstrate that an exclusion – such as inherent vice, improper packing, or ordinary wear and tear – applies, rather than the insured having to identify which listed peril caused the loss. The practical difference is significant: all-risk cover responds to theft, water ingress, mishandling, and accidental damage without requiring the shipper to pinpoint the exact cause. For high-value, fragile, or perishable cargo, this broad coverage is the recognised market standard in international trade. Policies are typically structured around the Institute Cargo Clauses (A).
