When a forwarder has booked capacity on a route and the airspace suddenly closes, the consequences ripple through the entire supply chain within hours. An airspace closure is an official prohibition or restriction of flight operations within a defined geographic area, issued by authorities such as EUROCONTROL or national civil aviation regulators. Triggers include military operations, geopolitical crises, natural disasters, or security threats, and the restriction may last from a few hours to several months. For air cargo, the immediate effects are flight cancellations, mandatory reroutes, and capacity shortfalls. Alternative routing adds fuel costs and transit time – a particular risk for temperature-controlled or time-critical shipments.
