For anyone shipping or receiving international air freight, almost every critical step runs through the airport: airway bill acceptance, security screening, customs clearance, and physical handover to the carrier. An airport is a regulatory-approved aerodrome with full commercial infrastructure—runways, taxiways, aprons, terminal buildings, customs and border control facilities, and ground handling services. Major international airports go further, operating dedicated cargo terminals around the clock with cold-storage capacity for pharmaceuticals and live animals, plus road and rail connections for onward distribution. Unlike basic aerodromes, only airports with the appropriate designations are authorised to handle international commercial cargo. In customs law, airports designated as ports of entry are the points at which imported goods must be declared and placed under a customs procedure.
